STUDENT ACCESS AND DISABILITY SERVICES

Policies and Procedures

Truman State University seeks to ensure access by providing accommodations necessary for access to individuals with a disability as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and the ADA Amendments of 2008 (ADAAA).  ADA defines a disability as “any mental or physical condition that substantially limits an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities” as compared with the average person in the general population.

ADA does not require the following when considering accommodations:

  1. Accommodation cannot be an excessive financial and/or administrative burden to the institution.
  2. Accommodation cannot change the nature of the academic program or the school’s curriculum, including giving an accommodation that would give one student an unfair advantage over other students, lowering academic standards and/or fundamentally altering course or degree requirements.  Accommodations cannot be retroactive.
